3 Ways to Slim Down Quickly Before an Event

We just celebrated my daughter’s 4th birthday, it was super sweet. My family knows that once her big day arrives each year… that summer is here!

When you live in the midwest, summer is a big deal as we know we only have this beautiful warm weather for just a short time.

So as the weather warms up, it’s time to pull out the warm weather clothes.

For most of my adult life, this was a depressing ritual. It wasn’t depressing because my summer clothes didn’t fit, it was that they were too big! Huh? No, they fit just fine… the number on the tag was too big.

Shorts? Nope! Tank tops? No thank you! I just wasn’t happy with my body and did whatever I could to hide and cover it up, no matter how hot it was.

My size wasn’t the only issue, the overall condition on the inside and out was.

The unhappiness was taking over my life. It was affecting my most important relationships... mainly my marriage and my kids.

I couldn’t be who I wanted to be or who they needed me to be when I was all wrapped up in how unhappy I was… with me. 

Many attempts were made in many ways… always with the focus of a way to slim down quickly. Weight Watchers, Jenny Craig, NutriSystem, the latest diet fad, juice cleanses, diet pills, workout programs, gym memberships, personal trainers, late-night infomercial weight loss solutions… you name it, I tried it! There are so many special diet cookbooks in my kitchen, it’s truly overwhelming. 

Accused of being a total optimist in every area of my life… I always thought I could get my weight under control… that’s why I kept buying all the stuff. But knowing HOW exactly was my issue.

A major mindset adjustment was needed in order to understand how the body worked with food and activity. That’s why I didn’t truly understand. I needed to get to know myself. 

Fast forward to spring 2013, I was around 200 lbs. I had 3 boys who were 8, 6, and 3. Every day was a struggle to keep up with my life… my main goal was survival, literally.

I remember looking at myself in the mirror and asking myself “when are we going to make a real change? Like a FOR REAL life change?” 

That’s when I decided… there’s no better time than NOW! 

I did a ton of research and followed a simple challenge. I tracked literally every single thing I ate, drank, walked, and moved. Every. Single. Thing.

You can’t change what you don’t track.

What I learned changed my life. I learned about myself. I learned how I worked. Finally, I changed my mind about health and weight loss… and how to do it right.

I ended up losing 30 lbs in 90 days. The best part? I knew HOW I did it. I knew exactly how to finally hit my goals and become totally healthy.

Fast forward to the Quarantine of 2020! I found myself in the kitchen more and more experimenting with lots of cooking and baking. My family created so many precious memories in the kitchen over those months at home.

As the weeks went by and the cooking went on… so did the extra pounds. And suddenly I had gained 10 lbs in what seemed to be overnight. 

Mother’s Day came and my sweet husband bought me a super adorable dress. He rarely buys me clothes without showing me first, but apparently, he saw Reese Witherspoon in this dress and just knew how much I would love it.

I mean Sweet Home Alabama and Legally Blonde… how can you not??

He was RIGHT! I saw it and LOVED IT instantly. He knows me and knows that dress was totally my jam… until I saw the size! My post-quarantine body was not ready for that.

Then he went on to mention how perfect this dress would be for our upcoming family pictures… and once again he was RIGHT. It would be perfect. 

But there was NO WAY I was going to fit into that dress.

Later, I took the dress, hid in my bathroom to try it on. Yup, just as I suspected… I couldn’t even get the zipper up a quarter of the way. This dress did not fit, not even close. 

He sweetly offered to return it. Living with me for the past 18 years and through all the struggles with my weight and self-image issues… the LAST thing this man wanted to do was to make me feel bad or put pressure on me for my size. 

I SAID NO! This was the perfect motivation I needed to get back on track and lose those quarantine pounds. I needed to slim down quickly.

The Mission: Lose 10 pounds and get into that dress by family picture day. 

I went on to plan the entire color scheme for the 6 of us… all revolving around that dress. Nothing quite like going ALL IN on a goal!

There are few things more motivating than needing to slim down quickly for an event… to literally fit into the outfit you are going to wear. Oh and PS. look good in it too. That helps.

I planned and prepared for the 10-Day Detox.

A fully comprehensive healthy cleanse and detox plan all based on healthy eating.

The specific eating plan focused on lots of fruits, veggies, and clean, whole foods.

The goal here is to remove all of the junk… sugar, dairy, wheat, grain, soy, chemicals, toxins from my system.

I hung up the picture of Reese in the dress so I would see it every day.

I physically took the dress out of my closet and hung it up in my room to serve as a constant reminder of what the goal was.

I learned a long time ago that in order to accomplish anything we want in life… that we just need a super-specific goal with a solid plan and a hard stop deadline to accomplish it. 

HOW TO SLIM DOWN QUICKLY?

All weight-loss all boils down to a couple of things:

  • Water is your BFF
    • at least drinking half of your body weight in ounces of water
    • take your body weight divide by 2. That’s how many ounces you should be drinking daily
  • High intake of fibrous foods
    • Veggies
    • Fruits
    • Legumes
  • Increase lean protein
    • chicken
    • fish
  • Cut the carbs
  • Steps
    • I’m not a big believer that you need to hit the gym to lose weight but I am a huge believer that you need to move!
